Walking home from school one day,
Three young men found a prematurely hatched duckling
On the sidewalk by one of their homes:
Its shell had been broken from the outside.
They took it to their porch, and tried to think of how to save its life,
But their efforts seemed to no avail as it continued dying.
Deciding that the only option was to quickly end its life,
They ran through some ideas
But as the minutes passed, and they grew more desperate,
And the hatchling's chirps of pain
Pounded heavy in their hearts,
They acted with unthinking obligation
